Oyama studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where he completed a Master of Music in Advanced Performance and a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance under Julian Jacobson. He later completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Utrecht School of the Arts in the Netherlands, studying with Alan Weiss.
